Welcome to the Grizzly’s newest column: Harmon Thoughts of the Week. This is a space whose sole purpose is to provide and examine weekly quotes, inner musings, and old Turkish sayings that come from our school’s exalted principal.
Our first edition brings us: “The crow thinks his baby is a falcon,” an old Turkish saying courtesy of Mr. Harmon’s wife.
I think the beauty of these quotes is their true open endedness, each one offers a journey for the individual to discover on their own. When I read “The crow thinks his baby is a falcon,” I first think of the symbolism of the two birds. Crows are notoriously bad omens, symbols of death and the macabre. Falcons, on the other hand, are ambitious creatures – birds that are known to represent power.
My take on what this week’s words of wisdom are trying to communicate is that people who do bad things often see nothing but purity and goodness in their children. Alternatively, the message could be that crows should not be tasked with classifying their offspring.
That’s all for this week’s edition of Harmon Thoughts of the Week. I’d love to hear some other interpretations of what our esteemed principal had to say and stay tuned for next week’s edition.
