The Girls Varsity Soccer Team became a reality at BASIS Independent Brooklyn for the first time last fall. The team competed in the fall of 2024 and made it to the league quarterfinals. It was a very successful and exciting season, and we were all glad we took part in it. Right now is the off-season, which means we practice twice a week to prepare for the upcoming 2025-2026 season.
In the fall, we had two coaches – Coach Shaq as well as Coach Nadia. Coach Nadia is a current senior at BASIS Independent Brooklyn, who had an ACL injury that sadly made her unable to play. Instead, she took on a leadership role as a coach. In spring, we welcomed a new coach named Allison. She is currently coaching our team for our upcoming tournament on Memorial Day weekend.
In the fall, we all trained together and improved our game, even though none of us had played together before. After playing a couple of games, we even won a game that bolstered our confidence.
After showing up to the game with no referee and an extremely small field, we agreed with the other team to play anyway. Our coach volunteered as a referee, and we played a 7 vs 7 game instead of the usual 11 vs 11. We ended up winning 11-2 with Willa S. ‘27 scoring the first-ever goal in the team’s history! It was one of our best games, and we went on to make it to the quarterfinals.
The next game is Memorial Day weekend, and it is a tournament. We have been practicing regularly during the past few months to prepare. The team is still looking for players, so if you or any of your friends are interested in joining, then we have practices every Monday and Tuesday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the Red Hook Field next to IKEA, and you can stop by and practice with us. Since we are a new team, you could even stop by and tell us you would like to play in the tournament!
The team consists mostly of 10th graders, but it also includes 8th- 12th graders. Any rising 8th graders or other high schoolers interested in joining next year or for the tournament can talk to Crosby P. ‘27, Nadia S. ‘25, or just show up to practice. We practice in different locations, but we mainly use the soccer field near IKEA. If you can’t find us there, contact someone on the team who will help you find your way.
