This winter, BASIS Independent Brooklyn launched a Varsity Girls Basketball Team. After weeks of practice and preparation throughout December and January, the players took to the court on January 21st for their first game.
In an exciting debut, our Bears managed to win by nearly 10 points. The final score was 34 to 25. This win was even more impressive when you factor in the face that during their pre-game practice on the day of the game that one team member sprained her ankle. Our team’s ability to persevere through this unexpected obstacle set the tone for the full season where our Varsity Girls Team played a total of 4 games, losing 2 and winning 2.
Leading the charge was Sophia ‘28, who delivered an extraordinary performance in the first game with 25 points scored, accounting for nearly the entire team’s total. Six of the remaining 8 points were scored by Lexi ‘28, and the final 2 by Abby ‘ 29.
While our Bears were not officially in a league this year, they will be joining next year. We hope they can play in more games, and that our community can come out and support them. Many of the girls on this team have never played basketball competitively before, and in the face of injury and nerves, they showed resilience, perseverance, and teamwork. Their win in the first game set the stage for this season, and future seasons. We are all excited to see this team continue to grow and improve.
