Every day, almost half a million workers commute from New Jersey to New York City to work, and this represents about 12% of NYC’s workforce. Half of all those commuters from New Jersey have to use the collapsing, 115-year-old North River tunnels to reach the city. The alarming aspect is that they could fall apart at any moment. If just one of the North River tunnels closes, according to RPA, the capacity and usage for those tunnels will be cut by 75%. This huge issue could seemingly be fixed with one project, the Gateway Project.
The Gateway Project aims to expand the number of trains by creating new rails in Penn Station and under the Hudson River. Moreover, the government also aims to repair aging tunnels, such as the previously mentioned North River tunnel.
However, this program has been underway for a long time.
Created in 2011 to replace a similar project called ARC (Access to Region’s Core), the need for a project like this in the northeast significantly increased after many East Coast infrastructure disasters, particularly Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Katrina. Even if imminent, funding for this program didn’t materialize for twelve years. In 2023, the Biden administration focused a significant amount of federal funding on the project. Now, only 2 years of progress into the project, President Trump has decided he wants to pull the plug on it by significantly decreasing its funding and potentially terminating it.
President Trump has stressed the uselessness of this project as well as its expense.
“It’s thousands of people, and it’s billions of dollars,” Trump said. “We’re getting rid of a lot of things that we never wanted.” While the program itself is estimated to cost 16 billion dollars, many people have shown that this, in fact, is an important issue to them. The topic of the Gateway tunnel was a huge factor in the NJ Governor elections, where Governor Mikie Sherrel was especially passionate in fighting for the Gateway Project, which could have contributed to her victory. Her win over Jack Ciateeriali shows that people care about this issue and care about someone who will fight for this cause until its completion.
If Trump decreases the funding of this project, it will likely cause significant delays to the construction, which was already projected to continue through 2035. If the maintenance for the North River tunnels is delayed with the gateway project, at least one of them is bound to close due to safety concerns, decreasing the reliability of trains. Almost everyone in our community will be affected by this, from teachers to students and parents, dealing with increased traffic due to more congestion since more people need to drive.
No matter where you live, you will be affected by the Gateway Project, even if it continues or not.
